5 Foods that can cause Stomach Blockage (Intestinal obstruction)

My mother had a failed operation when she was getting her appendix taken out. For some reason, the doctors didn’t clean it properly which caused her to get complete intestinal obstruction, which means absolutely no food OR WATER can pass down. They had to re-operate, but since then, she can’t eat many foods as it easily blocks the stomach. I shall list them for you, to help you avoid certain food if your stomach has similar problems.

These may look all nice, chopped up and soft but do not fall for the trick! Anything like this, especially eaten in great amounts, can cause the worst pain in the stomach for people who easily gets blocked stomach. When my mother ate this, she was in pain for about 3 days, the worst it ever got. If you’re having them, chew it VERY WELL and only have a little bit.

Raw Carrots

Raw carrots are like a curse, it even happens to me when I eat a lot of raw carrots without chewing properly. I get this really weird nauseous feeling for a few hours. However, I’ve noticed that when I chew it very fine before swallowing, it doesn’t happen as much. Also, cooking it so that it’s soft completely gets rid of the problem.

Edamame Beans

Soy beans

Oh those are evil, even cooked, if you’re sensitive to hard foods! Those caused my mum problems a few times, and she loved to eat a big bowl of them.

Peanuts, particularly raw, can also block the stomach, particularly if you’ve been operated and have some kind of scar. I recommend very roasted and properly chewed peanuts, or peanut butter.

Multiple Bananas

(These are brilliant, but don’t eat them all at once!)

This was actually story from a friend, she ate 8 bananas in a day and her stomach kind of got blocked. So, eat one or two, but not eight. I guess eight was just too much for the stomach, even though that stuff is mushy and soft.

How does it feel to have blocked stomach?

Sometimes, you can experience a really stuffy stomach, like a kind of nausea and cramp that’s very unique, and make you not want to eat. You may also experience bloating, constipation, vomiting and diarrhea.

Tips to decrease the chance of blockage:

Try and avoid raw foods, always cook them well, even though sometimes it tastes better to be able to chew your food.

Try and eat smaller meals each time.

Chew your food very well, do not just chew a couple of times and swallow. Your throat may be able to take it, but your stomach ain’t gonna be happy!

So sorry to hear about your stomach problem. It must be horrible not knowing what food may do that. What kind of symptoms do you get when your stomach gets blocked? For me, it’s this really uncomfortable stuffiness and whenever I look at the same food, I get very nauseous.
